SOLSTICE STRING QUARTET

Gregor Riddell ~ Cello

Gregor Riddell was born in London in 1985 and began the ‘cello at a young age. In 2006 he graduated with a degree in Music from Cambridge University where he received composition lessons from Giles Swayne. He has been taught ‘cello by Melissa Phelps, Oleg Kogan and David Waterman. In 2008 he completed a PGDip (distinction) in composition at the Royal College of Music where he studied with Kenneth Hesketh. Gregor recently wrote and performed a work for cello and electronics in the Faster Than Sound 'Spheres and Splinters' project at Kings Place described as "passionate and elegant" (Chamber Music Today). In 2008 Gregor co-formed the mixed ensemble ‘Living Room In London' comprised of five instrumentalist-composers. They have performed at venues including LSO St Luke's, the ICA, the Vortex, Klangspuren Festival, featured at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with critical acclaim and toured the UK and Europe. Last September they recorded their debut album with Sessionwork Records, which will be launched at Kings Place in January 2012 where they will also premiere works by Peter Wiegold and Milton Mermikides. In Februrary 2012 Gregor will hold a full scholarship Artist Residency at the Banff Centre where he will write a new substantial electronic work for this ensemble. He is also a member of band Monument Valley, which will release its second EP with Tritone Records in November 2011. Gregor plays a Thomas Dodd cello made in 1799.
