SOLSTICE STRING QUARTET
Gregor Riddell ~ Cello
Gregor Riddell was born in London in 1985 and began the ‘cello aged 7. In 2006 he graduated with a degree in Music from Cambridge University where he was taught composition by Giles Swayne. He has received ‘cello lessons from many eminent teachers including Melissa Phelps, Oleg Kogan, Philip Sheppard and Natalie Clein. In 2007 Gregor was awarded a scholarship to study electronic music at the Iceland Academy of Arts with Kjartan Olafson and in 2008 completed a PGDip (distinction) in composition at the Royal College of Music where he studied with Kenneth Hesketh. As well as playing in the Solstice Quartet Gregor performs and composes for an eclectic mixed ensemble, Living Room in London, which features a recently invented instrument called the hang. They have toured internationally and returned from a run at the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe with critical acclaim: "inquiring and bold original writing from the musicians themselves…utterly absorbing" (The Herald), "the most intriguing musical fusion I've heard in Edinburgh" (Richard Morrison, The Times). Following the premiere of his string quartet 'Touch-In, Touch-Out' Gregor is currently working on a cycle of short piano pieces.
